Zakir Khan, MD is a Primary Care Physician, board certified in Internal Medicine. He graduated from Aga Khan University Medical College, Pakistan, in 1993, and later completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Connecticut in Farmington. He subsequently travelled to Hawaii to complete an additional year of training in Primary Care and Community medicine. After moving to Alabama in 1999, Dr. Khan joined Birmingham Health Care as their Clinical Director, and spent 5 years providing quality medical care to the underserved and homeless population of Birmingham, before joining Ascension St. Vincent’s, formerly Medical Center Blount, Oneonta in 2005. However, he had always dreamed of opening his own primary care medical practice.
Primary Care Services, Blount opened its doors in January 2007, with Dr. Khan as one of two founding partners. Since the inception of his private practice, Dr. Khan has continued to provide comprehensive medical care to the wonderful residents of Blount County and surrounding counties. He has a special interest in chronic disease management and practices a holistic approach towards illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and various other acute and chronic medical problems. His work at PCS Blount is not a job for him, it is his passion. And his commitment to his patients is reflected in his own words, “I treat my patients like my family”.
Mina Khan, MD is a Family Physician and a graduate of Aga Khan Medical College, class of 1993. She has been living in Alabama since 1999, when she moved here to complete her residency training in Family Medicine, at Medical Center East. After completing her residency, she started work at Medical Center Pell City in January 2003. After 3 and a half years she left her employed position with a goal to start private practice with her internist husband, Dr. Zakir Khan. Together, they conceptualized and founded Primary Care Services, Blount, which has been providing primary medical care to the residents of Blount County and the surrounding areas since January 2007.
In addition to being Board Certified with the American Board of Family Medicine and the National Board of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Khan is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). She has also completed additional training in Vaccine Science through a fellowship offered by the AAFP. This has provided her with unique insight into the field of vaccines. She enjoys caring for patients of all ages and has a special interest in health maintenance and promotion, particularly among children.
Outside of work, Dr. Khan enjoys travelling and working out at the gym.
Ashley Nolen DNP, FNP-C is a family nurse practitioner who joined the team at Primary Care Services in December of 2020. She received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing and later was awarded her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She holds a national certification with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Prior to transitioning into the role of nurse practitioner, Ashley practiced as a nurse for over 4 years at UAB Hospital in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, and later as an assistant nurse manager in the UAB Highlands Intensive Care Unit. She has a special interest in rural primary care, and as a local to Blount County she has greatly enjoyed the opportunity to care for the members of her community. She considers herself a native of Snead, Alabama.
In her spare time, Ashley enjoys gardening, reading, and playing golf with her husband.
Brittany is an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner who joined our practice in 2016. She is a Blount County native, graduating from Locust Fork High School before attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in nursing in 2009 and served as a registered nurse in UAB’s cardiac intensive care unit, and later the post anesthesia care unit. While working as an RN at UAB Hospital, she earned a Master of Science in nursing and attained certification as an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner in 2016. Her master-level education also includes a sub-specialization in occupational health, for which she received training in occupation related health and safety, a valuable tool when providing care for the adult population. Brittany is certified to perform Department of Transportation physicals.
After her last clinical rotation at Primary Care Services, Blount she was thrilled to be given the opportunity to join the team and serve this community. She enjoys caring for her patients and building trust that develops relationships. She is passionate about improving quality of life for her patients by providing education, resources, and evidence-based care.
Brittany lives in Oneonta with her husband and two boys. When she is not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family, riding bikes, reading, and traveling.
